Both functional and beautiful, this string is handmade using traditional processes where the agave is stripped, washed, brushed and spun by hand to size on a traditional drop spindle, which is known locally as a malacate. This fine string is ideal for craft projects, wrapping packages, embroidery, natural dye sessions and even weaving, plus it serves as a testament to the industrious creativity of Mexican culture. We’re offering individual skeins, in which no plastic or synthetic materials are involved. The material is wound around a large river reed that’s found in abundance locally, as it’s an invasive species.
Our agave thread is handmade by an indigenous family of artisans in Central Mexico. This innovative group make a range of brushes, bags and cloths, as well as our custom sponges in various designs and sizes. They employ traditional processes that have been in place since pre-Hispanic times.
