Our gloriously minimal medusa hats feature a fine weave, medium brim, shaggy fringe, and are created by hand to our specifications, exclusively for our stock. Every piece is individually made by a family of master artisan weavers in Southeastern Mexico. As these hats are not shaped on a steam press, they showcase the organic shapes that come from this intricate weaving process. These classic works pair beautifully with a range of outfits – as the design is timeless and the featured hue is a perfect neutral that is found in the undyed plant material.

Artisans
The practice of biophilia in design honours the importance of the connection between humans and nature, and the healing effects that it has on our lives. This effort to bring the outside in not only encourages an atmosphere of calm and well being, but also offers the opportunity to live sustainably through carefully selected investment pieces.

This family of master weavers both grow and cultivate their own monocot plants for their creative process. Jipijapa is a species that is similar to the toquilla palm that is used in Ecuador to create the famed panama hats. This soft, flexible and durable material makes for stunning works of art that are as long-lasting as they are beautiful. Every custom piece is woven in a cave, which the families have on their respective properties, to ensure that they maintain enough cool humidity to work on their weaving projects during any time of the day or year.

Dimensions
Approximately 9cm wide brim without the fringe, 12cm high and fit a standard sized head size around 56cm – 58cm. For those who wish to make the hat a little smaller, simply add a band around the base of the hat that can be tightened when required. As these pieces are made by hand, the size, shape and hue varies. We can leave the fringe extra long and shaggy or we can trim to desired length.

Care
Wipe with a damp cloth to clean. Do not use harsh cleaners or bleach. Avoid getting this piece wet for risk of damaging the material. If this does occur, set the piece in a cool, dry locale and reshape with steam if necessary prior to.

Note
The listed price is for a medusa jipijapa hat. As these pieces are made by hand from natural materials, the size and hue vary per piece – no two are the same.
