Chilly temperatures abound in the Guatemalan highlands – home of these sumptuous brushed wool blankets that are made by local elders from handspun wool on traditional standing looms. While these soft throws will stave off the cold, they are also an ideal year-round textile as they wick moisture away from the body, are extremely durable, and also act as a natural temperature regulator.
These stunning investment pieces are available in a traditional arrow and stripe design in cream and navy blue. We also have a single piece with grey stripes and a turmeric arrow design. This collective began as a single family traveling throughout Guatemala in order to sell their quality textiles. As demand grew, they incorporated other members of their village into the fold, in order to be able to take on larger orders and to benefit their community as a whole. Their group is now comprised of ten families who collaborate on client orders in order to make a living and preserve this local artisan tradition, which is now mainly relegated to the older generation.
The history of weaving in this village dates back to the late 1700s, and these blankets – which have historically been produced as trade items – are made with handspun wool that is both undyed and naturally dyed. Every throw is woven on a standing loom, then taken to the local sulfurous hot springs for an intensive felting process that cleans the blankets of oil, dirt and impurities, and also makes for a thicker, more resistant piece. After this, the blankets are brushed to release loose fibers, which makes for a silky soft piece that does not pill and with proper care, looks like new for years.

Given the nature of handmade, sizes, designs and hues will vary slightly from the featured product image. Every one of these pieces is one-of-a-kind, with no two the same. As the wool is washed, carded and spun by hand, there will naturally be small bits of material, changes in tone and other variations – this is natural. If you’d like to see detail images of the pieces before purchasing, let us know. The price is for a single blanket.
