Natural plant material has played a central role in the creative industries of Mexico for thousands of years. These custom mesh bags in a delicate tone of blush pink pay tribute to this cultural legacy by combining handwoven mesh bags made from wild agave with organic cochineal – a natural dye that was once the second most valuable trading commodity, only behind silver. This expandable medium weave piece features an adjustable strap of hand-cut leather. This bag is available in two sizes: a smaller market bag and a larger beach bag.
We work with six different artisan makers of these traditional handmade maguey bags. They are typically made by an older generation of artisans as a means of supplemental income, which they make while they are passing the time tending to their livestock.
The cochineal is sourced from a farm in the Oaxaca valley, and the bags are dyed by hand in our studio space. Cochineal is made from a parasitic being that lives on the paddle of the cactus. What was once a dye reserved for nobility, now graces a host of fine textiles, cosmetics and even food products.
In all, this piece helps to provide a positive steam of income for over 7 Mexican artisans.

This natural piece is durable, however leather conditioner should be applied to the strap in order to avoid drying and cracking. A weather protective spray should also be applied to the strap to keep stains from happening.
The noted price is for one bag, without pompoms, which are sold separately. Given the nature of handmade, sizes, designs and hues may vary slightly from the featured product image. The rustic leather straps are hand-tooled, and with this, there will be nicks, scratches and hue variances in the leather – this is normal and due to the handmade process.
