Both comfortable and stylish, these pieces are a Zapotec tradition that represent the stages of life. Our particular design in camel cotton, includes a yoke of turquoise embroidery that highlights the phases of human experience and elements of the natural world. The round neckline represents the earth, with the subsequent lines illustrating birth, multiplication, happiness, planting, harvest and blessings. The underside of the sleeve is also circular, and speaks to the end of the cycle – where we go back to the earth. It can be worn with sandals and a straw hat, or layered with tights, ballet flats and a long cardigan – the perfect piece to transition from winter to spring.
Our artisan partner learned this traditional technique from her grandmother and her aunts. While these traditional dress are no longer worn by the younger generation in their community, she feels that it’s important to continue to share her knowledge through her pieces, in order to educate people about their fading traditions, and also to pay tribute to the memory of the women in her family.

We recommend dry cleaning this piece, in order to maintain the integrity of the finishes. It may be hand washed in cold water with mild soap. No bleach, no wringing, no washing machine and no dryer – for risk of damaging the handwoven textile. Lay flat to dry and warm iron with protective layer overtop. Hand washing may result in slight shrinkage.
