Those who have had the pleasure of enjoying a tlayuda in Oaxaca are likely familiar with these ubiquitous carrizo plates that are found in this region. In addition to being durable, biodegradable and lightweight, these natural beauties also look lovely as simply wall hangings. In the interest of sustainability, these plates are made with the same type of river reed as our drinking straws – a material that grows in abundance in our area.
Our custom plates are made by talented weavers in Southern Mexico using locally sourced river reeds that are plentiful in the region, and are harvested sustainably. Local makers have been working with this material since pre-Hispanic times, in order to create an array of decorative and utilitarian pieces that are still commonly found in markets and households throughout this region.
Charger plate is approximately 35cm wide x 5cm tall
Sandwich plate is approximately 23cm wide x 2cm tall
These plates can simply be washed by hand in warm soapy water, when needed. Do not clean in the dishwasher or use harsh chemicals, bleach or scrubbers, as this will warp the material.
