Dress up your cupboards with these little darlings – handmade to our specifications with earth from the local agricultural fields in Southern Mexico. These lovely vessels are ideal for storing a range of spices – from saffron to chilies – are safe for food service and are 100% lead-free. Every piece is individually made by hand, dried in the sun, pit fired using traditional processes, and are then burnished and topped with a cork. As they’re made with unglazed pottery, the name of the contents of the piece can easily be scratched into the piece with a pin, if desired.
Both utilitarian and traditional art piece, barro rojo pottery can be found in a variety of areas – from outdoor food vendors to elegant restaurant tables. These particular pieces are made custom for our collection by our partner, who learned these incredible creative skills from both her mother and grandmother. The vessels are shaped on a simple wheel and also by hand. Texture and polish are added through the use of corn husks, oil cloth, stones and coconut shells, and the pottery is pit fired for roughly one hour to arrive at the ideal hue.
Approximately 4cm wide x 8 ½cm tall, not including the cork topper
While these pieces are unglazed, given the nature of the pottery, it is best to hand wash these spice jars and do not put them in the dishwasher, nor the microwave. If you place greasy items in these handmade pieces, they may stain. Further to this, they are porous and are not meant for holding liquid for long periods.
Use of knives or other sharp pieces will scratch the surface of these ceramics. The price is for a single spice jar with cork top. Given the nature of handmade, sizes, designs and hues may vary slightly from the featured product image.
