The coastal region of Oaxaca supports an abundance of plant life, including yachi – a type of fruit with a hard exterior that is found on local gourd trees. The shells of this fruit are commonly halved and used as vessels for drinking mezcal. Artisans in this region also work with this material in order to produce intricately carved pieces – from jewelry to lamps, and these holiday ornaments. Designs range from birds and animals to flowers and geometric shapes.
